Skype yesterday released their 3rd public beta release of Skype for Linux. The last two were really flaky, but with this one I can actually make calls that work.
Besides stability, the main new feature they have added is SkypeOut which was already in the Windows version. This allows you to call normal phones at some ridiculously low rates. It’s cheaper for me to call long distance within Panama on SkypeOut than it is with my normal phone.
While it has core dumped on me a couple of times, the biggest problem getting it working is sound. The Unofficial Skype + Linux Sound FAQ got me going, so check that out.
Still with my artsd running as suid and the buffer on the minimal setting, people are saying there is a big delay. When talking to me. However that could also be network latency (I guess).
Anyway get your mits on it: Download Linux Skype
